Jenny Somers was born on Chincoteague, 1/29/52, to the late Jimmie and Mary Thornton. She passed peacefully on 12/21 at her home on Chincoteague surrounded by family.
Jenny lived the majority of her life on the island and was proud to be a Teaguer. Jenny was a talented artist, superb cook/chef, informative tour guide/wildlife interpreter, skilled draftsman, historian and fascinating story teller. She loved teaching others how to paint and how to cook traditional Chincoteague meals. She began drawing and painting as a teen and was the proud winner of many awards for her artwork. As a draftsman, Jenny designed many houses on the island.
Jenny will be missed by her loving husband, Stewart; sister, Jane Silveria (Mitch); sister in law, Mary Stonesifer (Bruce); son Bryan Hamilton (Lisa); granddaughter Becky Hamilton; niece Amber Bird (Matt) and nephews, Luke and Joe Stonesifer; great nieces, Jasmine and Lexi Papadopolous; great nephews Michael Papadopolous and Evan and Kinley Bird; and many other friends and family. At Jenny’s request, she was cremated and there will be no immediate service.
A memorial boat cruise up the bay will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jenny’s name to the Museum of Chincoteague Island.
