Josephine McGee, beloved Aunt, passed away on January 21, 2020 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake, Salisbury, MD after a long battle with cancer, at age 86. She was born in New York, NY to Matilda and William McGee on May 26, 1933. At age 18, Josie survived lupus nephritis, then a fatal disease, by entering a clinical trial at the Rockefeller Institute testing the use of steroids to control Lupus.
Despite a lifelong effort to manage her illness, Josie thrived, a frequent international traveler, and person of many intellectual interests, and numerous friends. She was an account executive in pharmaceutical advertising in an era when few women attained such positions. Her zest for life and sense of adventure made her a favorite in her large extended family. She adored living in Manhattan and was a long- time volunteer at the American Museum of Natural History. Among the many countries she visited Spain was her great favorite. Relatively late in life she walked the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, a cherished achievement.
Josie was preceded in death by her long- time companion Tom Lyons, and her sisters Kathleen and Matilda. She is survived by seven nieces and nephews, five great-nephews, and five great- grand nephews and nieces.
A funeral mass will be held at St. John Neumann, Ocean Pines, MD on January 31 at 11 am. Interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, NY at a later date.
